I am envious of your list of 'perks.' I assume you live in the US (?). I am currently a student in Canada. I know there are numerous reasons why I'm *so* lucky to be living in Canada, so I almost feel guilty posting this, but I find there is a major lack of understanding for Narcolepsy at a lot of institutions, even the 'disability advocacy' ones. Any assistance I ask for ends up as a Spanish Inquisition. Hardly anyone seems to have heard of Narcolepsy, and so I am constantly asked mortifying questions in order to justify, justify, justify why I deserve support. Once, I was almost denied assistance at a disability centre, even though they had valid documentation from my specialist on file. Even at the Motor Vehicle Branch, the people behind the counter had never heard of Narcolepsy and they issued me an invalid driver's licence that my specialist and I had to clear up with the Superintendant....The list of horror stories goes on.... I've had family members tell me that I need to have "patience and understanding" if I want to get anywhere at these various institutions. I find this advice *so* ironic - shouldn't government agencies be showing *me* patience and understanding?!
Sorry for the rant. I know I've become bitter and reluctant to ask for any 'perks' now. :( I've been told many times that there is far more support available in the US for Narcolepsy...
If anyone has any information on Canadian rights, etc. concerning Narcolepsy, I would be extremely appreciative if they could post it.
Thanks.
gone2bed.
