I agree with SleepyCat. When I was on FMLA for other reasons, I was able to start back on a restricted # of hours schedule and they only counted the number of hours until it reached the amount that would be used up by a single day until they counted the day. That may help you, but I'm not sure if it was a case of the employer being very nice and giving me a break on how they tallied the time out of work and goes on an employer by employer basis, or if it's a part of the mandated FMLA. It would certainly be worth asking. Your employer will have a copy of their FMLA policy, make sure you get a copy for yourself real soon so you can see what kind of wriggle room you're allowed with it. Otherwise, go find it on the web probably at a government wweb site because you need to know the full info available and the restrictions it imposes on you and the employer. That way you can be sure they are doing everything they can and aren't mis-interpretting the laws. Good luck to you.
