Just a real sleepy guy...

Posted by JASG on August 13, 2003 at 18:42:06:

My sleep doc told me I have "idiopathic hypersomnia". "You're just a real sleepy guy". My sleep study showed I did not have sleep apnea, and I had a "99% sleep efficiency".

I don't fall asleep driving or anything, but I get exhausted as early as 11am. When I have to work, I'm usually so busy that the adrenaline and external stimulation keep me going, but any lull and I'm ready to doze off.

I'm not sure if this is a mild form of narcolepsy, or something else. Basic stuff like thyroid/LFT's/CBC are OK.

I kind of just go through life and not worry about it, but it drives my wife nuts that all I want to do is sleep all weekend. "Nobody else is like this" she says.

I've been like this at least since college. I've been on Provigil, with excellent results. I now have had the energy to run for and get elected for a local government post, am starting my own company, and have a 50 hour a week job. I also do much more around the house and much more with the kids.

Problem is, I'm getting killer headaches in the back of my head. I got an MRI (negative) and have been taking a fair amount of pain meds. I stopped the Provigil the past 3 days, and the headaches are MUCH better.

I'm bummed because I found a solution for being so sleepy, but now the side effects are too much. I'm wondering if there are like metabolites or something with Provigil that take a while to build up, and these cause the headaches.

Any thoughts?
