Mechanism of narcolepsy...

Posted by charles757 on August 21, 2003 at 09:39:26:

Hi,friends, please read the following description and try answering some questions. Thank you!
·My daytime wakefulness are fragmented by periodical sleep attacks. It seems like abnormal wakefulness-sleep attack cycle every two or three hours, like NREM-REM cycle of nocturnal sleep in normal people. (e.g., uncontrollable sleep usually intrude at 9:00am, 11:00am,12:40pm, 3:00pm and/or 6:00pm.)
Q: What current drugs could have a little effectiveness to treat the impaired wakefulness-sleep attack cycles in ultradian rhythm form?

·When sleep attack(the sleepy feeling produces in the occiput) occur, I must need a 15 minutes or more nap to relieve symptom. The region in the brain that controls wakefulness and sleep just goes into a short-time deep sleep and then can produce a refreshed feeling. At the same time, my lower jaw often has quick and slight movement to touch upper jaw(not teeth clenching) and hands or legs sometimes have a twitch during the transition from sleep to wakefulness.
Q: Why have jaw or hand movement during sleep and the transition from sleep to wakefulness? Do you have the same jaw movement, etc.? Is its mechanism linked to the pathology of narcolepsy?

·Normal weight. No sleep apnea and restless legs movement were detected during the overnight sleep study. The average of sleep latency time was only 4.5 minutes and a REM sleep was detected in the MSLT.
·No cataplexy. Ever had sleep paralysis.
·Began to develop excessive daytime sleepiness at the age of 13 without reason.

Q: Is narcolepsy likely to be a rhythm disorder characterized as wakefulness-daytime sleep attack cycles as the result of impaired function in the region that control wakefulness-sleep rhythm? What substances in brain change to trigger sleep attack and support the refresh feeling after nap?
