Hi Java!
Cataplexy is the only symptom of N that is really typical and occurs with no other disease. So the only way to be sure that somebody has N is - apart from a sleep-study - if he/she has typical cataplexy. If your doc knows that and is informed about N he can be that sure that rapidly.
Nevertheless seeing a sleep-specialist and doing a sleep-study is a good idea since it's possible to have more than one problem at a time. If you do it you maybe can rule out having some additional problem. And it can be easier to find the right medication.
Zoloft is an antidepressant. Antidepressants are given PWN against the REM-symptoms, and especially against the cataplexies. The improvement you experience from the Zoloft is an additional hint for your muscle tone losses really being C.
When I got my dx I felt miserable and happy at the same time. I felt like having a malfunction on the one hand and of course would have preferred being okay, but on the other hand it was good to have an explanation for so many problems and - not to forget - a cue what to do to improve my whole situation. As I was told as a replay to one my first postings here: A dx changes everything!
All the best!
Shadow
