You are mistaken; Provigil was not designed for N. It was approved to treat N. Big difference. Someone else will have to remember what modafinal was originally used to treat. It didn't work but one of the side effects was alertness. So, my guess is that Cephalon decided it would make great money if they could get it on the market to sell to a world that wants to stay awake more, longer, less sleep for everyone. We PWN were the avenue they used to do so. Off label uses now can be anything from MS, ADD, sleep apnea, "shift work disorder," to apprarently those who are tired in life--regardless of what the reason for the fatigue is.
I read in a report that it actually is only used to treat N for 11% of the people who are taking Provigil, yet Cephalon made 196.3 million dollars in 2002 from the sales of Provigil alone. So who are they really selling it to?
As for the success rate of it.... there seems to be a whole lot more negative experiences than positive ones. We did an unofficial poll here some time ago and it came out about 50-50. But I've read of very few who stay on it long term. Most of those who think it is helping them are still in the early stages of using it. At any rate, there is absolutely no way the clinical trials Cephalon conducted could have been so successful when the actual use of it has not shown that success. So, in my opinion, there is a lot that is not being told by the manufacturers. That alone will keep me from using their meds.
My choice is not to continue playing guinea pig. I'm willing to wait for a cure. Meds are not the only option to treating N.
