My 2 year old girl sleeps from 7:30pm- 6am during the week and 8pm-8pm on weekends with a nap everyday from 12-2. She gets sleepy around 10am as well. She goes through phases when she will wake up abruptly in the middle of the night screaming. She'll go back to bed most of the time, sometimes strugges. She began sleeping through the night at 7 weeks old.
However, I don't have any long term problems getting her to bed at night. Ocassionally, there's an issue but I know that toddlers go through normal phases these types of problems due to growiing spurts, teething, crib to bed transtion, separation anxiety, illness, things like that. For the most part, she goes to bed. I am pretty strict on her bedtime, it maybe varies by 10 min max and we have a routine everynight. We read a book, get a drink of water, turn her lullaby music on and I rock her for one song in the chair. She knows her routine and is comfortable with it.
On the other hand, since I have narcolepsy, I can't tell you that I haven't wondered the same as you. When I was very little, I had horrible nightmares and I would wake up screaming. I wonder if she is having the same problems when she does wake up at night, which has been recently on going for the past 2 weeks.
Whether I will pursue it, I don't know yet. I do know that when I had my sleep study and MSLT, during small talk with the sleep tech I asked her if she ever had to wire up a baby or young child for a sleep study and how did the sleep, etc. She said she had a two year old one time and their parent had to be next to them.
So, if you are concerned greatly, you could pursue a sleep study on your child.
