whether or not you choose to pursue diagnosis (and I suggest you do, if only to access supports for him while he's in school...it will be very hard for him otherwise), my advice is to set him up an account on this site to post. There are good people here and it's well monitored. They'd be very supportive and they can relate to what he's experiencing. One of the hardest parts of N is how people without it can't really understand. Having somewhere to go and talk would probably be a huge help for him. There are also Narcolepsy groups in some cities. Maybe check for one in your area.
