More sleepy than the next person?

Posted by bedbug on July 08, 2005 at 23:27:37:

So, I've had some problems being really sleepy since I was about 16. There was a profound difference over a relatively short period of time and I became certain that something was *wrong* with me. They took blood tests, blah blah but didn't have any answers and I've just been really tired ever since...about 10 years.

I guess what I'm wondering is this: My sleep doc thinks that I probably have narcolepsy, maybe apnea as a second guess, but probably not based on the other indicators, and there is a study scheduled. I've had some weird experiences falling asleep at inappropriate times, like on a kickboard in a swimming pool or in a pile of lint and tools while fixing my clothes dryer with a friend. But these are sort of rare. Mostly I would say my main problem is being sort of catatonic and useless starting around 10 am. I can stop myself from sleeping if I keep getting up from my desk and walking around, but I can't really function well and am just counting the time until I can nap. Basically if my eyes are open and I am yawning every 10 minutes I'm happy. Sometimes I go home and nap instead of doing other plans I have made. I leave work early a lot so I can go home to sleep. However, I feel like being able to stay awake for 8 hours is sort of against the narcolepsy rules, even if it's a pathetic excuse for awake.

Are there degrees of severity for this disorder in terms of the EDS? Can narcoleptics stay awake sort of zombie like for 8 hours the way normal sleepers can stay awake for days if they try really hard?

My study is a month from now, so it's hard waiting to know what's going on. That seems a bit absurd given I've been waiting over 10 years :)
Thanks.
