I can force myself to stay awake, sort of, as well but as you say, it's a pathetic kind of 'awake'. Just because you can force yourself to move around, doesn't mean you're alert or functioning well. There are many PWN who experience EDS as you describe, not being 'out' asleep, but just severe attacks of sleepiness even though they can often force themselves into a kind of resistance to falling completely asleep. One of the keys is, if instead of fighting the sleepiness, if you napped - do you feel refreshed a bit? I tend to do better giving into the nap for 15 minutes or so. It exhausts me spending the same 15 minutes trying to stay alert....
