Narcolepsy vs. Sleep Apnea

Posted by firefitr26emt on July 14, 2005 at 19:29:26:

I just took a sleep study. Haven't got the results yet. What are the main differences between sleep apnea and narcolepsy? I was thinking I had Sleep Apnea but the more I research I more I think it sounds like Narcolepsy. I will give you a run down on my typical day: First of all I wake up at about 6am to go to work. I always wake up without the alarm, because I wake up off and on throughout the night, and just end up awake before 6am. I have trouble getting going in the morning, but once I do. I am ok. I leave at 7am. Drive 30 miles to work and am ok when I get there at 745. by about 930 I am very tired, no matter what I am doing, meeting with a client, in a meeting, on my computer, or driving, I will fall asleep. I can try to keep my self awake, but by 11am, I have to take a little 3 minute nap, when no one is looking just to kind of recharge. because it is impossible to stay awake. after that I am ok for an hour or two. But then I get really tired again. By 2pm I can barely keep my eyes open and pretty much have to sneak a nap again. I leave work at 4pm. I am in town for 10 miles, if I can't get out of town without falling asleep I pull over in town otherwise, I pull over outside of town and take a 5-10 minute nap. Then I can make it home, usually. Sometimes, I do have to pull over again. The STRANGE thing about these short naps, is I have very vivid dreams, which to me seams odd, in such a short time.
Anyways what can anyone tell me about the differences between narcolepsy and sleep apnea? Do my symptoms sound like narcolepsy?
