Provigil (modafinil) was not designed for N. It is a drug that was previously used to treat other health problems. I believe it was first thot to be useful in treating high blood pressure, which seems ironic since it is known to cause high BP in some. It didn't work for its intended purpose, but it was noticed that it had an alerting effect, thus it as tested to treat N.

It is believed to work in a more specific region of the brain than other CNS stimulants, but they don't yet know just how it works and for many PWN (perhaps as much as 50%) it doesn't work.

I think that Xyrem is the only drug that is made to actually address the underlying sypmtoms that cause N--giving us more restorative sleep in the proper sequence of stages--thus lessening the daily symptoms of EDS & C. But even Xyrem was used for other purposes before being used to treat N.
