for me it is difficulty distinguishing between sounds, within a certain tone range. I'm fine for most things, but a part of the normal range of conversation, if there is background noise within the same tone/level, I have great difficulty picking it out. I've always wondered because otherwise I have really great hearing - more sensitive than most actually, and yet for some conversations, with the tv, radio, or other noise in the low/mid tone range of human speech, I can't seem to pick out the sounds, especially consonants. I always thought it was just a quirk. I worked in a bar for a number of years where you couldn't hear clearly over the music and I learned to lip read pretty good.
