The one thing that I couldn't understand about narcolepsy for many years was why I had a hard time "staying" asleep. When we read up about narcolepsy the information always states that narcoleptics cannot remain awake over long periods of time. The other "important" fact that is always left out in the information concerning N is that narcoleptics "also" have a hard time "remaining" asleep.

So this is why you are obviously confused. Trust me it is normal for narcoleptics to have multiple awakenings during the night. Sometimes we even get micro awakenings that only last seconds without knowledge of them occuring. I have heard of one woman who said that her sleep test showed that she would get 60 micro awakenings during the night, not counting how many times she would actually wake up (I think it was about 20 times a night.) So now you wonder why your sooooo sleepy all of the times. Or bodies and minds never get the rest it needs.

So its not an issue of you being an insomniac, its an issue of you being a narcoleptic!
Look at it this way, "A narcoleptic cannot remain in a state of conciousness or unconciousness comfortably or over a long period of time." (narcolepsy is "not" just an illness where we sleep all of the time. Its more complicated then that.)

I hope this helps you understand a little bit more of what your going through.

Some narcoleptics are starting to try a drug called Xyrem (GHB) to help them sleep at night so that they will be less tired the next day. Some say that it has improved their restful sleep while others claim that it doesn't do much.
