Hi,
Yeah get use to it my friend. I have had this illness for half of my life now and I know what you mean by not so intelligent people thinking that you my have another illness. People think narcolepsy is not a serious condition, however look at the education some of these people have and it should tell you something about themselves, ignorant!
Hey, to this day I heard all sorts of stuff from people, "you are on drugs, depressed, lazy, etc..." I have heard it all and the story never ends too! Just take my advice, it never will end either. You are always going to have some hot shot now it all coming around preaching to you about how they are the Jesus Christ of medicine and they KNOW what is wrong with you and it is NOT narcolepsy. They are idiots! These are the same kind of people that will argue with you until they are blue in the face that the world is flat and not round, they deny all evidence around them! Narcolepsy exists, it is a REAL neurological illness, it is well studied and documented, etc... however they DENY all evidence.
Trust me, you will live with this for the rest of your life too. People are generally ignorant, that is human nature! Also these same people will make up excuses for when they are sick or have illnesses, however when it is somebody like yourself that is suffering from a serious illness they will deny that you have it (Or they will under play the seriousness of it.) Also you might encounter hypocrites that might also put the blame on you for why you have this illness. (Almost like when they are sick or have a life long illness it is justified, but when it is YOU that is suffering from a neurological illnesses you must of put that onto yourself. You might emcounter these same people preaching to you that it is because you have poor sleep habits, poor diet, because you are lazy, etc...) Once again, get use to dealing with ignorant people. The only solution is to not tell anybody that you have this illness. If somebody suspects something is wrong with you just tell them that you suffer from a serious sleep disorder, but don't tell them which disorder it is even if they ask you. (just cross your fingers that God will will give them some serious illness in return to make them think about how they have treated people like you and I. I know that sounds harsh to say BUT at this point in my life I simply do not care after the bull that I have had to tolerate from ignorant people!)Then you can return the same empathy and sympathy onto them as they gave onto you, NONE!
Oh by the way, hope you meet poeple with this illness however do not get your hopes up high, it is a very rare illness my friend. As I stated, I have had this for half of my life and I still have not meet or known anyone with it. And to tell you the truth I probably would not want to know anyone else with it either. I have talked to some people in the past with it on the internet and I have to tell you something my friend, "there are a lot of weirdo's out there!!!" Just be careful who you talk to about this illness, some people who say that they have it really don't!
