The answer is a maybe. There are other disorders that can show the same symptoms. At the top of list is REM sleep deprivation. Most common cause of selective REM deprivation is difficulty breathing during REM sleep. Many people only experience sleep apnea during REM sleep due to the reduced muscle tone.

Short REM onset can be do to REM deprivation. The body tries to make up for the lost REM, and when you first fall asleep you will go into REM sleep If you have trouble breathing in REM you will wake up during the dream and know you were dreaming. You only remember your dreams when you wake up during the dream. Otherwise the best you will be able to do is have a vague recollection.

This is just one possibility of why it may not be narcolepsy, there are others.

Since you don't have classic cateplexy, the only way to know is to see a sleep specialist and have him rule out all the other possibilities.
