Hi!

I have a problem which I thought was "normal", but suddenly it is interfering too much with my life and I need to get my grips on this.

I am 20yr old, I study Computer Science at a College in Portugal. Unfortunately the nature of my course brings attached some nights without any sleep, because of the projects overload they give us.

In the first semester of this year (from September to January, 2007) there were 9 nights when I didn't sleep at all. In the second semester there were 8, but the last two were straightforward, so I was awake for 60hrs straight. I had over a month to recover now, sleeping 9-10hr every night (or more, like 11-12 at some weekends) with very rare exceptions and suddenly a huge problem arises. I can't get up in the morning. No matter what I do or how many and how different alarm clocks I use, I shut them all off without even gaining consciousness of what I'm doing. Sometimes my girlfriend calls me and tells me I have to get up and keeps talking with me for a few minutes. I tell you: I remember very very little of this episodes, almost like I was dreaming, when I wake up 3 hours after this. I even lie to her, telling that I'm already up. This is really strange since I'm as honest as man can be when fully "awake". I simply find it impossible to consciously control this.

Lately, because of this, I started getting personal problems because I miss appointments or I simply wake up at 2/3pm.

After this got serious, I moved to my mom's house in a "i need help getting up" request.

She has a hard time waking me up in person, but she succeeds most of the time. But even then, after eating my breakfast or taking my bath I have a huge, uncontrollable desire of slipping into bed again (this happened already).

The problem is: When she totally succeeds waking me up I get a strange headache for all morning.

I really need to control this, since it's starting to "destroy" some things in my life. And I cannot rely on my mother forever... Somehow, I need some independence and responsibility (which, in the morning, simply fade). It's like my subconscious has taken over myself and does not know that I REALLY have to wake up, most of the times and even when I don't, I would like to.

Would you please help of advise me?

Thank you very much.
