I was recently diagnosed with narcolepsy. I began having symptoms during a long bout of insomnia during my teens, but it only really happened when I was sleep deprived. This was rare, though, because after I got over the insomnia, I never, ever had any trouble getting to sleep. In my early twenties, I began having symptoms of hypoglycemia. This is a metabolism disorder that is very similar to diabetes, but instead of high blood sugar, the hypoglycemic is affected with low blood sugar. If I don't eat often enough or if I have too much sugar, I find myself shaky and week, sometimes on the point of delirium.
When my hypoglycemia became full-blown, my narcolepsy symptoms increased in frequency and intensity. Once I got my metabolism under control, the narcolepsy symptoms abated for awhile, but have in the past year become bad enough that I knew I had to do something about it. My doctor put me on 100 mg of provigil, which made me feel like I was on speed or something, and I haven't been able to sleep at night. I've gone from about 10 hours of great sleep each night to about 4 hours, and don't feel like I've slept at all. It's also really screwed up my metabolism - I have the shaky, weak feeling almost constantly, but I don't have much appetite, and I don't feel like I have the energy to exercise at all.
My doctor doesn't seem to know anything about any possible link between narcolepsy, or narcoleptic symptoms, and metabolism disorders. If anyone else has experienced anything similar or knows of any good research, please let me know!
Thanks!
