Hi Sleepspell,
I wish I had something practical, and useful to tell you. What you wrote has kept coming up in my mind these last weeks. So I came back here to answer.
No , it's not fair.

It's a different story, but I know someone else who got N probably from brain injury from family treating them like they didn't matter. And then the family saw the N, as an excuse to keep treating them as less than a real human, almost like it justifies their original opinion of their kid. And most people can't see how resourceful and determined the person with N has been to get through this far. They just see symptoms, and think it's weakness.
Needing the same people who could have caused it and having to accept their help on the condition that they can keep treating the person with N as less than who they are, is really hard.
And being someone who got treated that way by their family even before the narcolepsy had already affected their confidence has made handling the N harder work for them.
For them, it all just keeps looping back and back on itself.
And I wish I had something useful to tell you. But I wanted to say thanks for what you wrote.
You've done amazing to keep going. Don't give up.

Would there be any narcolepsy support groups nearby - people who'd understand and share experiences on how to handle welfare claims.
