All of that sounds almost exactly like my experience. I've been struggling with it for 15+ years, and was just diagnosed with narcolepsy last week. For the first 10 years or so I remember my eyes would burn/tingle until I shut my eyelids, but for some reason I don't notice that as much anymore (maybe because I've become less able to fight it for as long?). And I generally only have problems with falling asleep when I've been sitting or standing inactively for too long (maybe 20-30 minutes). If I fight it I go in and out of consciousness over and over like a revolving door, and have aural hallucinations (I would think I was still awake listening to someone talking, but the words I heard were clearly something I had dreamed). The hallucinations just as you're falling asleep are called hypnagogic hallucinations. And apparently that revolving door experience is called microsleep events. When I finally give in I'm generally out for 20-30 minutes (although sometimes longer), and I'm in a bit of a fog for awhile afterward. Anyway, this is my first post here, but I wanted to give a shout out to you - you're not alone, you're not crazy, it is diagnosable, and it is treatable. Good luck!
