My heart goes out to you - this is very similar to my own experience with diagnosis. After many years of asking doctors for help and searching on my own, I brought the idea Narcolepsy to my doctor. A neurologist, no less, who should have known better.
He literally laughed in my face and told me that wasn't it, but to humor me he set up a sleep study. Actually no..he said "boo!" and tried to scare me into cataplexy (even though I never claimed to have cataplexy of any significance ), THEN he laughed and said I was wrong. Once my MSLT test came back picture-perfect narcoleptic, he was willing to admit that was what was going on.
Moral of the story is, if you haven't been getting the answers and responses that you need, you've got to take things into your own hands. It is reasonable to suspect that you may have N, and responsible to reqest a sleep study even in the face of disagreement from your doctor.
Doctors don't like to be wrong and usually blame the patient for being "noncompliant" or "difficult" when their suggested treatment doesn't work. That being said, they do genuinely want to help people and learn, so I encourage you to help your MD or DO learn something new! I hope that the testing reveals something that will be helpful for your sleepiness issues :)
