Narcolepsey?

Posted by Ryan on October 27, 1999 at 13:43:24:

For the last three years of my life I've been suffering from a number of symptoms. The biggest one of course is always being tired, no matter how much or little sleep I get. I can fall asleep anywhere at any time, whether or not I'm standing, watching a movie, or driving a car. I am frequnetly embarrassed by this loss of facial muscle control and general numbness which seems to stem from my spine outward, causing my knees to buckle slightly and my grip in my hand to go limp. I've noticed that it is consistently triggered by certain emotional feelings that I get, like for instance when I tell a joke and people laugh at it. I also get these dreams pretty much every night that are so realistic, that I have often times been confused as to whether or not something actually happened, or if I just dreampt about it, (I can't wait until I get old and start losing my mind?!).

I just turned 23, and I'm in the US Marines, which as you can imagine has only compounded the problem and made every day life very difficult. I have seen numerous doctors, but all to no avail, (they keep patting me on the back and telling me it's just stress). I have had a sleep-latency test done on me, but having a cold at the time, with my nose running and a cough that wouldn't let me fall asleep - it was no surprise when they came back and told me I was perfectly "normal"! I have finally gotten them to schedule me an appointment to see a neurologist, but how can they be sure one way or the other if this is what I have?

What kind of life does one live after being diagnosed with narcolepsey? I'm assuming a career as an airline pilot or even a state trooper would be out of the question, but would I even be able to keep my drivers liscense? Thank you all for any info you may care to share.
