Effectiveness of Provigil

Posted by Shelly on October 27, 1999 at 16:23:59:

I am 17 and was diagnosed with narcolepsy in May '99. My doctor presented me with basically three options: ritalin, Provigil, and amphetamines (spelled wrong I'm sure!). He said that Provigil didn't have the bad side effects that other meds have. I thought I felt something at first, but now I'm falling asleep as much as ever. So far, I can't sleep until 2 in the morning no matter how hard I try, but I still have to get up at 6. It has rendered my birth control useless, and my migraines are worse, all of which I brought to the attention of my doctor. His suggestion: drink several caffienated sodas throughout the day, take two 10 minute naps, and go to bed earlier. I don't even feel that the stuff works at all except when I take Excedrin Migraine for my headaches which seems to make me start to shake. I know your not supposed to, but I gave a couple pills to some friends. One fell asleep on the couch 45 min. later and the other said they felt no effect, except they felt the need to move around and didn't want to sit still for about an hour. I take 200mg once a day in the morning. I've only been diaganosed for about 4 mos. and don't even know much about narcolepsy itself let alone treatment options. Any advice would be helpful. Are there better options that Provigil? And are there any medications that won't mess up my birth control? I DO NOT enjoy suddenly starting my mentrual cycle in the middle of my pack and having it last up to 10 days, the higher risk of pregnancy, or the fact that my acne has returned because my B-control doesn't work. I am also concerned about the fact that I am suddenly an airhead because I can't even remember what day it is sometimes, totally space out at work and move in slow motion, and my GPA is dropping because my brain seems like it is some kind of fog and I don't seem to "get" a lot of things that used to be so easy. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
