John,

It took me 32 years to get diagnosed. My symptoms first occurred at age 13 and my mother worried that I had leukemia because I slept so much--took me to our GP and I got put on thyroid meds which I didn't need at that time. Really didn't pursue the sleep disorder with a doctor again until about age 38 and was told by a classically misinformed doc that I couldn't have a sleep disorder since the sleep attacks occurred in monotonous situations like freeway driving. Finally was diagnosed by a neurologist at age 45 and sometimes think about the much better quality of life I could have had with earlier diagnosis, though I am very happy to at least have a reasonably effective treatment (Provigil) now.
