John,

I suffer from IH, not N, and as I understand it one of the differences is the circumscribed sleep attacks of short duration (N) vs. a more pervasive sleepiness with longer sleep episodes (IH). I don't feel tired and can be feeling very energetic until I get into a passive situation, then I drift into sleep and it is indeed uncontrollable (without medication). About the only thing that guarantees wakefulness for me when I'm not on meds is physical activity and I have even resorted to getting on my NordicTrak in order to finish a book I am reading. I found that doing beadwork (needleweaving with tiny glass beads) enables me to stay awake while watching a video (though I am obviously attending more to the audio than video portion, and foreign films with subtitles are, unfortunately, ill-suited to this approach!). Similarly, I can more easily stay awake "reading" by listening to an audiobook while beading. Fortunately, I love to bead so it isn't at all burdensome to use this strategy. Narcolepsy and IH truly teach us to be creative and resourceful in coming up with strategies to live our lives as normally as possible.

Linda
