From onset of symptoms to diagnosis was about 25 years, but I attributed my sympotms (which were intermittent for most of that time) to lack of sleep or fatigue.
When I got fired for sleeping on the job, my wife convinced me to talk to our family doc about what was going on. From what I have seen on this forum, he was one of the enlightened ones, because he immediately referred me to a neurologist with a certification in sleep/wake disorders. From initial visit to diagnosis was about 2 months -- including 2 "regular" EEG's, a 24-hour EEG, an MRI, a sleep study, and an MSLT.
Once I finally decided that something may be wrong medically (rather than something wrong with ME), things went pretty quickly. I was lucky that I had a primary care doc that knew what to look for, and lucky that he referred me to a sleep doc who knew what he was doing. I was also lucky that the insurance I had at the time covered everything without giving us any grief at all. (Not sure my current ins. will do that).
That was about 6 years ago, and I feel like I have my life back (at least most days).
