I agree that there is much overlap between these disorders (IH and N), but my understanding IN GENERAL (from a combination of personal experience, reading I've done, info from my sleep specialist and my father's sleep specialist--we both suffer from IH)is that sleep episodes in IH are longer and that USUALLY naps are not that helpful. My sleep episodes are usually an hour or so in duration, are irresistible and often accompanied by hynagogic hallucinations, and when I awaken--if I am not on meds--I will frequently just fall asleep again for another hour unless I am doing something physically active. However, I have discovered to my surprise that on Provigil naps seem to be somewhat helpful. If I sleep for an hour around 4 p.m., I am usually good to go on Provigil for the rest of the day. Without the nap I still fall asleep if I try to read or watch a movie in the afternoon or evening on Provigil. For what it's worth, I don't have cataplexy, nor does my father, and I thought that was one of the aspects of differentiating IH from N, but Rick's experience proves this is not always so.
