I'm 19 and never really suffered from depression in my life until I got Narcolepsy a year ago although my Mother seems to be a little prone to it. Since I've got it, you'd never recognise me as the same happy person I always was, with strange bouts of depression during which I can get strange hallucinations and cry for days. When I get depressed I can easily sleep for up to 18 hours a day and still need a nap 2 hours after I wake up. I do think though that I tend to sleep to escape feeling so bad so in my case I'm pretty sure the extra sleep comes from the depression and not vice versa. All the same, I never really want to wake up at any time, there's just less incentive if I feel depressed. Although I need more sleep than usual now (Absolute minimum 10 hours a day) and can't help "Sleep attacks" and cataplexy, the severity excessive daytime sleepiness depends on my state of mind.
I have bad cataplexy and mild sleep paralysis as well as some very strange and vivid dreams that I can consciously control while sleeping so I'm pretty sure it is actually narcolepsy. Sleep tests I had showed I fell asleep in an average of 4 minutes and REM sleep started after 1 minute so the doctors were very quickly convinced. Unlike what everyone else said, I tend to sleep for an hour or so each time I nap, even though if I force myself to wake up after about 15 minutes it stops the overwhelming tiredness.
I read somewhere that several people's symptoms (Even sleep paralysis) went away after they discovered they were mildly allergic to lots of things and removed them from their diets/environment. Worth checking as for years they were sure Narcolepsy was Auto-immune related.
