It took me a bit over 1 year, no thanks to any doctors, otherwise it would have taken longer. I actually saw my family GP over 2 seperate aspects, firstly over being constantly tired, secondly because everytime I laughed I fell over and couldn't move. The doctor seemed unconcerned with the cataplexy after a CAT scan confirmed no brain abnormalities and sent me in for about 10 blood tests over the excessive tiredness, all of which came back normal so he claimed it was my lifestyle (I had just left home for University and he said I was drinking too much and going to bed too late and compared it to people who experience "permanent jet lag" due to shift work requiring sleep during the day and being awake at night). After staying home and sleeping properly for a few weeks with no change he started talking about Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Luckily my Grandfather and Uncle are scientists and have access to a lot of material and found anm exact description in about 2 days which I took to my doctor who refered me to a Neurologist who had it all diagnosed within days.
