more on spinal fluid

Posted by PHILIP on January 29, 2000 at 12:45:29:

I got some email from someone who lives in the stanford area and recently went to a lecture by Mignot . He discused the recent spinal fluid results indicating that the controls( normals ) spinal fluid levels of hypocretin (orexin) were nearly identicle and did not vary over time. seven of the nine narcoleptics had no detectable levels of hypocretin (orexin). One of the nine narcoleptics nad very low levels of orexin and the ninth narcoleptic had normal orexin levels (which he figured brought the diagnosis of narcolepsy into question) and concluded by saying the obvious now we need to find out why narcleptics have low orexin levels , speculating the reason might be autoimmune in origin. personaly if narcolepsy is autoimmune I have my doubts about "orexin, etc" helping and wonder if neuronal stem cell therapy would't be a more likely remedy
