I too have had back pain upon wakening and medical workup never revealed a cause. However,
the one thing that has helped has been yoga which I started 7 months ago. It had pretty much eliminated my back pain until I had to temporarily discontinue the class due to a foot problem. And now the back pain is coming back too. But yoga is great for strengthening muscles in vulnerable areas like back and neck, maintaining flexibility in joints, and preserving range of motion.
