Commenting as a psychologist with IH, I would first like to validate that MOST people, with and without N, do seem to have experienced difficult childhoods in dysfunctional families. I could go on and on (but I won't) about some of the causes of this which I believe lie in cultural mores and the nearly complete absence of attention to what really constitutes healthy parenting, much less to the cultivation of such skills.
Secondly, I agree with what Theresa has presented--REM sleep does seem to facilitate the processing and integration of experience, perhaps especially emotionally charged experience. I would add also that there is actually a psychological treatment technique based on the conscious induction of waking rapid eye movements which has proven highly effective in helping people overcome trauma. The technique is called Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and it requires special training beyond the standard academic curriculum for psychologists. I use it quite a bit with my clients and indeed, if one stops the procedure midstream (like interrupted REM sleep) the disturbance level is greater even than at the beginning, but if the client is allowed to complete the procedure, the disturbance dissipates almost entirely. Another interesting observation is that the eye movements make some people sleepy. And I noticed before I started taking Provigil (while on stimulants) that even watching my clients eyes move back and forth (which caused my eyes to move laterally as well) made me so sleepy that I had to consciously direct my eyes somewhere else to stay awake.
