I don't know of any studies done on the progression of narcolepsy. I have heard sleep specialists say there is no progression but I strongly disagree. My own symptoms have gotten worse. There are other factors that have to be considered which may exacerbate the symptoms. As far as I know, Joan had no other reason for the progression other than narcolepsy.
I can identify with the fear you mention. When I look at Joan I have to ask myself if the same will happen to me. What I have to keep in mind is that every one of us are different. It may happen to me but chances are just as strong that it may not. I have chosen to not let the fear of something that 'may or may not happen' deprive me of what limited energy (physical, emotional or mental) I have today. One day at a time.Narcolepsy is the most baffling and least understood of all sleep disorders. I hope the research being done by Dr. Mignot at Stanford will result in not only an effective treatment, but also lead to a better understanding of everything that is happening to us.
