They test for 2 different genes. One is HLA and the other is DR2 (or something close to that).
"Most" narcoleptics (the reported 98%) and "some" (the reported 25%) of the general population, have both. Some people only have one and some people have none.

My doctor used the test to try to clarify what was going on with me. My sleep tests did not indicate any unusual REM latencies or periods. Yet I report EDS (which was evidenced by a MWT but not by a MSLT), Sleep paralysis and HH. The blood test just helped him further rule out narcolepsy.

I had a doctor who cared enough and listened enough to treat me, even though I did not fit into one of those perfect little catagories.
