Jen --
As soemdoy's recent post points out (I think it was Betty Anne), the clinical evidence is what matters. Most people with narcolepsy have the genetic marker (90+ %?), but around 25% or more of the people without narcolepsy also have the marker. So, if you have the marker you probably are narcoleptic, and if you don't you probably are not. See what I mean about the clinical evidence (symptoms, sleep study and MSLT results, etc.)?
Also, I haven't seen anything on this forum about how (if at all) the genetic marker relates to idiopathic hypersomnlence, which is basically EDS without any other symptoms of narcolepsy. Does anyone out there know anything about this little side trail?
In summary, Jen, it might not hurt to get a second opinion. But if your symptoms are pretty clear-cut it probably isn't necessary.
Good luck. The forum is here to provide help and support whenever you need it. (works for me!!)
