My sleep Dr. gave me Vivactil and Provigil. The anti-depressant is to suppress REM sleep, but tri-cyclic anti-depressants are different from other anti-depressants. Other antidepressants can cause drowsiness and more sleep. So maybe the lack of the side effect of causing drowsiness is what your Dr. is considering wakefulness...

Not being drowsy and being alert are verrrry different... but might not be to a doctor...
