The Social Security Administration has several different program. Social Security (retirement benefits) are those that you are entitled to because of your work history. You and your employers have paid into this program and you are eligible when you reach the appropriate age.
Social Security Disability is for people who have a long enough work history to have built up benefits (paid by you and employer) before becoming disabled. Both SS Retirement and SS Disability come with Medicare.

SSI(Supplemental Security Income) is for people with a disability who do not have a work history to have built up benefits, or who have been on SSD, but have used up those benefits. Eligibility for SSI is based on 1)income and 2)a qualifying diagnosis. SSI comes with medicaid.

Medicaid covers prescriptions more benefits than Medicare. Medicare is for the elderly, but Medicaid is for elibible people of any age.

If a person is already on one type of Soc. Security program, their eligibility for a second type WILL be affected. Most likely the first benefit would cause them to be over income for another program. Example: if a child with a qualifying disability (for SSI) loses a parent and begins to draw survivors' benefits, he will be overincome for SSI until he loses the survivors benefits because of his age. This is often a problematic, because the child does not receive Medicaid, which pays for prescriptions, equipment, treatment, dental, vision, etc. that a child with a disability often requires.

Social Security is obviously complicated. I'll stop here before I confuse you (and myself) even more. I hope this helps.
