Provigil working even though I am not Narcoleptic?

I have a question about Provigil. I've been on it 2-3 months and it is working great for the most part. But I swear I remember my sleep doc saying that the reason Provigil works is because it works on something in the brain (a neuron? transmitter?) that is specifically associated with the diagnosis of Narcolepsy. But I do not have Narcolepsy. I have extreme EDS, and on my MSLT my average time to fall asleep on the naps was 3 min. But I never fell into REM sleep on my MSLT, only light sleep. Nor do I have cataplexy, so the doctor said I don't have Narcolepsy.

Is this correct that Provigil works on something associated with Narcolepsy and if so, does anyone know why it is working for me if I do not have Narcolepsy? I am just curious. Thanks!
