Lamictal = major change

Posted by Bev H. on April 26, 2000 at 14:01:17:

Lamictal has given me new hope. I had become so overwhelmed by the vivid dreaming. The dreams seemed inspired in hell, constant, and then staying with me through the day. I jerked, screamed, felt needle like shocks, had hypnagogic "stuff" and was constantly waking through the night. Most all of that has stopped now. Sometimes the dreams are downright happy. Wow, I can still hardly believe it myself. I had been hesitant to write much about this medication because it has a very serious side affect IF you have a reaction to it. However, very few people do. To be sure that a patient does not, the dosage is increased incrementally to catch any signs of a reaction early on. On the other hand there are very few side effects otherwise. Like depakote, recently menioned, it is an anti-seizure medication. I had my followup visit with my neurologist yesterday after having been on lamictal for three months now. He explained that it seems to quiet an overreactive sleep mechanism. That it somehow helps seperate the sleep/wake states. (Don't quote me, as I am sure he explained it better.) See http://www.rxlist.com/ for info on the drug. I still need the ritalin like always, but life seems worth living again. Come on, there must be others on this forum that have tried this. I'd be interested in anyone else's experience now, or in the future.
