As I understand it, Provigil is prescribed for treatment of EDS (excessive daytime sleepiness), which is only one of the four of five symptoms associated with narcolepsy. So if your diagnosis is idiopathic hypersomnlence (doctorese for EDS without any other narcolepsy symptoms), then Provigil is probably appropriate.

What your MD may have been referring to is the fact that Provigil is thought to work on the 'neural circuits' in the brain that actually control our transition between wakefulness, non-REM sleep, and REM sleep.
