Posted by John D. Lyle on April 29, 2000 at 03:03:58:I feel an absolute nerd.
I have Narcolepsy & Cataplexy, but because of information I'd read, I began to use the word Catalepsy.
I just did a search through these Forums, using the word "Catalepsy" & it seems that I'm not the only one using the wrong word.
Because I had seen so many people use the word Catalepsy, I thought it must be the right word.
The worst part is, that I began to use the word Catalepsy to describe what happens to me, when I experience extreme emotion & either callapse or go weak. I don't go unconscious when it happens, just feel so weak that I can't get up. Like ALL my strength has been 'sucked' out of my body.
It just shows you how mis-information can so easily spread, & become part of our language.
The worst part is that not only have I used the wrong word in here, but also to my Drs. No wonder they get so confused.Remember, Cataplexy is bascically "extreme weakness caused by emotion", & Catalepsy is a symptom of schizophrenia, where you become rigid.
I take it therefore that Cataplectic is refering to Cataplexy, & Cataleptic to Catalepsy.
It seems that most people use the wrong word, like me. It means something else entirely.
