John,

Your apology is accepted. I was not so much offended by what was said, as I was fearful that we could easily be distracted into focusing on our differences rather than our commonalities--the reason we have all found each other.

I appreciate your comments. However, I do have to disagree with your comment. Intelligent people do need (but don't always) to think for themselves to some extent. Without independent, creative thinking, the world wouldn't progress. However, in my opinion, it is just as important for intelligent people to accept their own limitations and to recognize that their own intelligence is useless without the benefit of what we learn from others.

In addition, I believe that education is not just accepting the ideas of others, but taking those ideas, evaluating them from our own perspective, and then using them (as presented or modified by or our own thought)to expand our own thinking. And hopefully by doing so we will all benefit.

An intelligent person recognizes that he can't survive on intelligence alone. He must respect the knowledge and insights of others.

An educated person recognizes the need for discernment before accepting every idea that is presented to him as valid. But an educated person can always benefit from listening to, and respecting the ideas of others.

Thanks again for your posting.
