Sunshine;
I also have a 17 year old son who sounds a lot like your son. he continually failed classes and acted out so we sent him to an alternative school, there he was diagnosed as depressed, he is on Paxil and Risperdal, but the Risperdal just makes him want to sleep all the time. He is also very talented and has a high IQ. He is also seeing a counceler. We are going to have to hold him back this year as he failed 5 out of 7 classes. They tell me he is just bored. Can this be right? He worries that he will inherit my Narcolepsy, and frankly i do too. Maybe these boys should talk. Irresponsible and impulsive is pretty much normal for 17. And I know and feel for you about their driving; scares the hell out of me, he's already rolled his car over in a ditch (small one-no injuries Thank God).
As to your symptoms, maybe you need a second opinion? I don't want to sound insensitive, but I know how it feels to be so confused. I was misdiagnosed for 15 years before i found out I had Narcolepsy, until someone finally refered me to a neurologist. Naming the beast took such a load off my chest, knowing that it wasn't my fault, that I wasn't just lazy. And this forum helps so much knowing your not alone.
Hang in there.
