Depression secondary to chronic disorder requires help

Posted by Pat on June 22, 2000 at 08:36:08:

Dealing with any chronic condition is very difficult. Feelings of failure (at home, at work, in relationships), financial difficulties, inability to function within certain parameters, social isolation, problems with others expectations of us - makes for a powerful mix of potentially negative emotions. AND as narcoleptics, we're tired - some of us all the time. Anyway, make sure if you feel yourself sinking into feelings of failure and worthlessness that you tell your doctor. Depression is treatable and curable, but after you've had it once (chronic depression is a different beast) there's a fifty percent probability that you'll experience another major episode, after two episodes it goes up again to 75%, and after three episodes it goes up to 90%. The sooner you catch it and get treatment for it the better the rest of your life will be. And the better your more immediate future will be - my children suffered horribly watching me suffer. My disorder (I'm referring to the depression I experienced) took away a chunk of their youth that no amount of my wishing for now will replace. (I could probably word that better but I don't know how, oh well.)

Depression in Narcoleptics is common - very few people understand what we experience, and it's not a popular disorder. And for now, there is no cure, so there's no end point. Teaches me new respect for the health professionals who have chosen it as their field of endeavor. Must be tough getting funding.

Anyway, don't hesitate if you're having difficulty dealing with this to yell and scream and stamp your feet or whatever to your doctor - having narcolepsy will always be a difficult thing but we do have some control. Symptoms of depression and symptoms of narcolepsy and side effects of drugs make for a confusing mix. Be vocal if you're feeling depressed.
