Dr Mitler of Scripps when I first began treatment recommended a regime of medication that went like this. He tested me on several medications to see which one worked the best. He further recommended that one weekend a month we go off our medication and periodically we take a drug holiday of two weeks to completely cleanse our system of the drug.
During these drug holidays if it was important that we stay totally alert and functioning another drug would be substituted and then after the drug holiday, go back on the original medication. This way we did not keep building a tolerance to higher and higher dosages of our primary medication.
He also prescribed 5mg Vivactil 2x a day to control cataplexy symptoms. Cataplexy is not a big problem for me so I only take it for nightmares to control the dream state but for those who have a problem with cataplexy it is a miracle drug. There are two problems with
vivactil. One is that if you have been taking it on a daily basis, when you go off it, it exacerbates the cataplexy for the first week or so while it is draining from your system. Two, it causes erectile dysfuntion in men. Barb
