Unless you can get into a group plan the only real purpose of purchasing health insurance would be for protection from a catastrophic illness. Narcolepsy FEELS catastrophic but it doesn't qualify in terms of cost. Cancer comes to mind.
I was able to continue my health insurance benefits through work after I was disabled. But back in 1993 it cost me $200. per month, and most recently the premium was in excess of $400. per month. I just gave up my insurance and went on my husband's plan so for a period of time we carried two plans.
I had my own reasons for carrying such an expensive insurance load, it's an individual choice based on your circumstances. It was very difficult when my income was only SSD and child support. Most of my income went for rent and medical costs. I was hospitalized several times, had an MRI, Neuro-Psych eval, second set of MSLT's and at least I was able to do those things. I also have Medicare Part A and B and I pay a monthly premium for Part B, too, but it isn't much.
We could have traveled the world a few times over with the money we spent on health insurance. Oh well, peace of mind sometimes has a price. It feels good to have carried it when I needed it and it feels good to not be paying the premium any longer.
Sounds like you're on the right track. Not everyone should be paying for health insurance. Putting those premium dollars into your own little medical expenses account might be the best idea. I recommended the same thing to my 22 year old daughter after she left college and was no longer on my health insurance plan.
Good luck!
