Improving the restorative quality of sleep is generally commonly addressed by doctors through our treatment. So, I think if you talk to your doctor about it, they won't be particularly surprised or unwilling to work with you. Difficulty falling asleep, multiple arousals during the night are (to my knowledge) common characteristics of narcolepsy.

People often try to self medicate beyond physical problems. Caffeine is the most benevolent drug that comes to mind. I guess I'm trying to say I'm not surprised you used alcohol. It's hard for all of us to stabilise our days and/or nights, so there you're not alone.

One of the drugs I tried to help my sleep at night was Amitriptyline, I've seen it mentioned on this Forum, too.

Presently I, too, lay awake for anywhere from 30 minutes (on a good night) to 90 minutes before I can fall asleep. I meditate because it works for me. Good luck. It can get better as you work with it which may take a while.

Good luck.
