Kristy,
The fact that you are so concerned about being a good mom should tell you that you ARE a good mom! Lighten up on yourself. You are doing the best you can do, and the only judge of that is you. There is a cousin to Narcolepsy called Hypersomulence. How fast did you fall asleep during your daytime naps as an average. If it is under five minutes I would think they would suspect hypersomulence unless you have other symptoms of Narc. But for sure the REM sleep at nap intervals is the major indicator for Narcolepsy along with Cataplexy. At home do you dream immediately upon falling asleep?
Hypersomulence can be just as distressing as Narcolepsy. Only with Narc you are contending with dream onset at odd times, and cataplexy. I am not sure about the HH, or paralysis with Hypersomulence.
I am fortunate that my kids are raised and out on their own, but I am not able to work. I do not have the energy. If I do any strenuous work, (which I make myself do) I end up in bed afterwards. I am working at gaining energy through weight loss. I have not been able to exercise per say, but the work that I tackle does bring my heart rate up. Hopefully, when I lose enough weight my energy level will increase enough to exercise. I can't even walk a block without stopping, and resting right now, but I have hope.
Are you taking Ritalin SR 20mg? That is the long acting one. I couldn't take that one, but I am back to taking the short acting 10mg 3X day. No, it isn't working 100%, but it is better than nothing. I am praying that they find an alternative way to treat our illness. My doc says that now that they have found the big clue, that usually... stressing usually... they come up with a "cure" or alternative treatment within five years. In the mean time we all struggle but the good part is we have each other to struggle with. You hang in there, and know that I had 3 different doctors that saw me for this sleeping disorder after it was diagnosed as such, so if you don't get the help you need from one, don't hesitate to find a doctor that is more informed.
One last thing... I have found that my self talk is very important... staying positive IS half the battle. Write when you can. Dreaming Donna :)
