Dear Elaine,
Thanks for your prompt reply.I actually moved from Edinburgh to Liverpool too. I will take your advice at my appointment (to be referred to another G.P. took months! so, as you say, I won't hold my breath!)
It will be good to have confirmation of what causes my cataplexy. Now I am aware of Narcolepsy I am impatient to be able to understand myself and that I am not the only one.
I have a wonderful husband who has quietly watched me have cataplexy collapses for years. The first few times I know he was scared (I was a bit concerned he might try to start pushing onto my chest and breathing air into my lungs and I wouldn't be able to stop him!). After some time though he became very calm about them though I knew he was still concerned. I feel dreadful that I didn't talk to him much about the incidents. I felt ashamed- during the attacks I had time to reflect on my, generally, over reactions to minor problems.
I heard a piece on the radio about a lady who had cataplexy every time she laughed, although it happens to me in frustration or anger I recognised myself instantly and told my husband. He then quietly went away and found out about narcolepsy. It was amazing to hear all the symptoms add up to all the strange experiences I have had since I was seventeen, terrifying waking dreams. It explains things I just thought were charcter traits - doziness,anti-social sleepiness.
I am finding out what I always knew, what a wonderful husband I have, who has never ceased believing in me. His tolerance and understanding are incredible. I have great admiration for all the spouses out there who seek to understand and accept. I will let you know how I get on'
Wishing you both well and thanks again,
Lorna
