I'm wondering if more than one sleep study is sometimes necessary; if someone could actually have a freaky (well, to us!) normal sleep experience at times. Or, perhaps another study could be needed because somebody or something wasn't up to par in the lab that day. From my own experience, while three (two were free; for research) overnight studies at two different labs showed very consistent, abnormal results, the one multiple sleep latency test I had, to check for narcolepsy, was normal! Turns out the doctor (a Ph.D.) overlooked the fact that I was taking Prozac, which, I found out later, is used in narcolepsy to eliminate an abnormality that the MSLT was looking for!
